The Big Boss Combo is a bluegrass band of accomplished musicians based in Richmond, Virginia. We
have known each other and played together since high school - and still like each other a little! Click to read a band review
by Magazine33 Members of the band have played on a national level for schools, businesses,
weddings, private parties, and sold out arenas. Combo members have played Leno, Letterman, Rosie,
Conan, CMT Awards, the Grand Ole Opry, the Birchmire to name a few. They have preformed for Governors, Senators,
and opened for well know acts such as the Statler Brothers, Aaron Tippin, the Seldom Scene, Alison Krauss, the Country Gentlemen,
and many more. Well traveled, the band prefers to stay fairly close to home and has taken their place as weekend warriors!
The Big Boss Combo proudly endorses "Bouncin' Betty" Hot Sauce.
Meet the Band:
Bill Lux on acoustic bass and vocals. Bill is known for his aggressive bass style
and deep, resonate bass vocals. He has played with the Richmond Symphony, played the Grand Ole' Opry,
worked on radio and TV commercials, filled in with the Seldom Scene and the Country Gentlemen,
and recorded a multitude of albums, tapes, CD's, with some of the top names in bluegrass.
Danny
Hughes whips the guitar and handles vocals. Danny is a well known and admired musician and songwriter. He
is also the author of the "plenty of food for the band" clause in our contract. Danny says "don't scrimp on
the shrimp". As a songwriter, Danny contributed to a majority of the songs on the Jackie Frost CD's, Calliope and Cold
Lonely Blues, and was nominated for "Song of the Year" in the Americana category at the 2006
Independent Music Awards.
Jim Skelding handles fiddle and vocals.
Jim toured with the respected bluegrass band, Appalachian Express and the well known country singer, Martina McBride.
Jim has numerous recordings, radio, and TV appearances under his belt including playing the Grand Ole' Opry,
and a little fiddle on Leno, Rosie, Conan -- and he even sat in with the band on the Letterman
show. Finally, he has enough experience to play with the Big Boss Combo! Jim's favorite beer is yellow.
Chris Fuller is on Mandolin and Vocals. Chris is not just an accomplished musician and singer, he
is an entertainer. At any time, he may bust out in a scat or a clog dance reminiscent of Jed Clampet. Chris has spent many
hours in the recording studio working on some prominent local recordings including a CD with John McEuen and Jimmy Ibbotson
of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Chris is also regulary seen with Page Wilson and Reckless Abandon.
Malcolm Pulley, the brains of the operation, holds the banjo and adds back
up vocals to the Big Boss Combo. Malcolm was once nominated for "Song of the Year" by the International
Bluegrass Music Association (In The Gravel Yard by Blue Highway). His songs have been recorded by numerous top names
in the bluegrass genre including Blue Highway, Doyle Lawson, and James King. His sense of humor is under investigation.
